I'm Dreaming of a Handmade Christmas… Literally!

When Christmas cracker hats take over your sewing room AND your dreams!

It's October. Most normal people are thinking about autumn walks, cosy jumpers and perhaps the occasional pumpkin.

Me? I'm drowning in Christmas fabric, surrounded by little fabric crowns, and I've officially reached the point where I'm dreaming about Christmas cracker hats.

Yes, you read that correctly. Dreaming about them!

I think I may have finally lost the plot. Or perhaps I've just spent far too much time at my sewing machine. Either way, Christmas has well and truly arrived at More Shabby Than Chic, whether I'm ready for it or not.

It Started With a Simple Idea…

I thought reusable fabric Christmas cracker hats would be a lovely addition to my handmade Christmas collection.

You know those flimsy paper crowns you get inside Christmas crackers? The ones that rip before you've even finished your starter, slide down over your eyes or end up abandoned on the table before the turkey arrives?

Well, I thought I could do better.

Something made from beautiful Christmas fabrics, something you could wear again and again, and something that wouldn't end up in the bin before the Christmas pudding.

A simple little sewing project.

Famous last words.

Just One More Hat…

The problem with Christmas fabric is that there's always another lovely design.

I've been using lots of different festive fabrics, and I've even got some new designs available on my website.

And, of course, I can't possibly choose just one.

One fabric becomes another, which becomes another, and before I know it, I'm cutting, stitching and making more hats.

The sewing machine is getting a proper workout, and I'm beginning to wonder whether I should start paying it overtime.

There's something rather satisfying about seeing them all finished, though. Each fabric gives the hats a different look, and I love imagining them sitting around a Christmas dinner table.

When Sewing Invades Your Dreams

Now, I love sewing. That's hardly a secret.

But there's loving sewing, and then there's spending so much time making the same thing that your brain decides to carry on working while you're asleep.

I've officially reached the second stage.

I'm actually dreaming about Christmas cracker hats!

Apparently, making them during my waking hours isn't enough. My subconscious has decided we need a night shift as well.

At this rate, I'll wake up on Christmas morning wearing one, surrounded by fabric scraps, wondering whether I've finished another batch in my sleep.

I'm not entirely sure whether this counts as dedication or whether I need a little holiday from Christmas.

Preferably somewhere without a sewing machine.

Or Christmas fabric.

Although, knowing me, I'd probably find a fabric shop. I'm Dreaming of a Handmade Christmas… Literally!

A Little Less Waste, A Lot More Christmas

Joking aside, one of the things I really love about these hats is that they're reusable.

Christmas can be such a wasteful time of year. So much wrapping paper, packaging and those little paper cracker crowns that barely survive Christmas dinner.

These fabric hats are designed to come out year after year.

They're also reversible, with an adjustable fastening, so they're a little more practical than the traditional paper versions. https://www.moreshabbythanchic.com/product-page/children-s-christmas-cracker-reusable-and-reversable

And I rather like the thought of something I've made becoming part of someone's Christmas traditions.

Imagine getting the Christmas decorations out each December and finding your fabric cracker hats ready for another year of festive silliness.

That's the sort of handmade Christmas I love.

The Christmas Hat Production Line Continues…

So, here I am, surrounded by Christmas fabrics, making more hats and trying not to think about how many I've already sewn.

I've added new fabric choices to my website, and I'm really enjoying seeing the different designs come together.

If you fancy something a little different for your Christmas dinner table this year, pop over to More Shabby Than Chic and have a look.

You might find the perfect fabric to match your Christmas table.

And every purchase means another hat gets to leave my sewing room and find a new home.

Which is wonderful, because frankly, they're starting to haunt me.

In the words of Bing Crosby,

I'm Dreaming of a Handmade Christmas… Literally!
